Shockey to stay?

June 26 2008

This flies in the face of everything that has happened in recent weeks, including that Shockey-Reese shouting match that was witnessed by several players.

But a source that has been accurate much of the time says the Giants have given up efforts to try to trade the tight end, and that Shockey will stay put.

Like I said that's hard to believe. But perhaps Reese could not get back in return what he wanted for Shockey. The rumor had been a very complicated multi-team deal was in the works, one which relied on a lot of things falling into place. One of the things that wasn't, however, was Shockey's ankle, and his inability to pass a team physical.

At any rate, maybe No. 80 will be in Albany after all.

Also, Brandon Jacobs is back from a visit to Hershey, where former GM Ernie Accorsi resides. But Jacobs did not go out there to visit with Accorsi, probably just to take his son to the water park.

But now that he's back negotiations are continuing on a four-year contract which could be concluded any day now.

If the Giants get Jacobs signed, come to an agreement on a much-deserved raise for Plaxico Burress, and somehow get Shockey back on the right track, what appeared to be a disruptive off-season might not be that bad after all.

We'll see. Now back to vacation.

Personally I don't buy it at the moment.

Chris Mortensen among many others believe that Shockey will hold out in training camp

I don't buy that Reese and Shockey has a blow about regarding an ankle injury. Coughlin seemed to be rather unhappy as well.

Shockey said he was healthy and it would have made more sense for Shockey to report as injured; it would give Rosenhaus more leverage.

Even if these sources are reliable and Shockey is reportedly off the market, it might be primarily to send a message to other teams to up the ante; either the Giants will get the improved offer they want (possibly before training camp) or we keep Shockey and implement whatever internal disciplinary actions that are deemed appropriate.

Shockey can stay if he falls in line, .he can be heavily fined and suspended if he does not or he can still be traded. With Shockey under contract through 2008, Jerry Reese is in the box seat.

I think there is still a good chance of Shockey being traded, Reese is just waiting for the right deal to get done that he wants.

The idea of a major multi-team deal is intriguing; I guess it would require players to agree. Anyone wish to speculate?

from http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d809057a6&template=with-video&confirm=true&campaign=ec0005

interestings part of this article:

Once camp kicks in and if the Giants simply wait and watch to see what unfolds, it is Shockey who will color most whether their union lasts. Even before then, the Giants will continue to entertain offers to move him.

The Giants will trade him in an instant if they get better than the second- and fifth-round pick package that the New Orleans Saints presented earlier this year. Moving that fifth to a fourth would likely do it. Getting a first-round pick and a solid player the Giants like would do it.

Over the next month, both sides have plenty to ponder.
and

An NFL general manager offered this view:

"Shockey is among the top five tight ends in the league. His blocking is downplayed. He is a very good blocker. Of all of the best tight ends -- (Antonio) Gates, (Tony) Gonzalez and (Jason) Witten -- he is easily a better blocking tight end than any of them. His receiving skills have diminished. He drops way too many balls. Some of that is likely just concentration and his situation. I would imagine before the season kicks off, there will be other suitors in a trade for him. Injuries and circumstances might call for it. But whether he is a Giant or somewhere else, the player should take inventory on what has worked and what has not worked for him in this league. And clean it up."

Very Interesting we can't get more in return alot of teams use two tight end sets, Miami give up a fourth rounder for Anthony Fasano w/ Akin Ayodele, we should get at most a second rounder. I know attitude has alot to do with teams not interested in Shockey but look at the Randy Moss deal, he was unhappy in Oakland and alot of teams stayed away for that reason, he goes to New England for nothing and sets records. We shouldn't miss Shockey, looks like we are going to more 4 or 5 WR sets (Plex,Manningham,Toomer,Smith,Tyree,Moss) should all be on the team, and Coughlin/Gilbride want to stretch the field a little more.

I think a 2nd and 5th pick would be reasonable.

What I suspect is that the current discussions are for player/s (with or without picks)

A 2nd and 5th still isn't worth it. Especially since that won't help us til next season and it immediately helps the other team this season. You can't compare this to the Moss or Fasano trades for a lot of reasons. Shockey doesn't get traded unless a team offers a first or a player that can help this year with a 2nd..

I think a player is the most likely; The obvious position is DT, but they are hard to find
