Here's a guy I wanted the Giants to draft out of college. Glad to see him now wearing blue.

He's got some issues but this should strengthen the offensive line depth if Andrews back problems can hold up.

It has beens said that Andrews passed three physicals before the Giants signed him.

I really like this signing.

Obviously the Giants haven't been happy with

the likely spot is to compete at left guard. If he is healthy, he should win the starting gig. This gives us a pair of pro-bowl calibre guards, this could be a huge impact in our running game.

It means that Diehl will likely remain at LT with Beatty the backup.

It is pretty obvious that the Giants are not happy with Whimper

It seems that Shawn Andrews deal is a series of 6 one year deals

Shawn Andrews gets a series of six one-year deals
Posted by Mike Florio on August 20, 2010 9:05 PM ET

Rosenthal alluded earlier today to reports that offensive lineman Shawn Andrews' six-year deal with the Giants contains very little guaranteed money.

Mike Garafolo reports, and we have confirmed, that Andrews will earn a $250,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $1.25 million in 2010. He has a split salary of $650,000, which he'll earn if he lands on injured reserve.

Then, if Andrews gets through 2010 in a manner that the Giants deem to be satisfactory, they will pay him (per Garafolo) a roster bonus of $3.5 million on the 30th day of the next league year, a base salary of $3 million, and a workout bonus of $500,000.

In each of the next four years after 2011, Andrews is due to receive a $1 million roster bonus, a $4.5 million base salary, and $500,000 in workout bonuses.

So it's more than a simple one-year "prove it" deal. The Giants have constructed a series of six-year deals, and they have the option each year as to whether they'll pick up the contract.

The irony is that Andrews became disenchanted with a long-term deal in Philly that he signed in his second NFL season, and that he believed he had outplayed. So if Andrews regains his Pro Bowl form, he'll once again be saddled by what quickly will become a contract that lags behind the top of the market.

I really like the fact we put him through three separate medicals.

He must have checked out ok.

I expect he will start out as a backup, but could press for playing time.

Sounds like the Giants protected themselves pretty well with that contact.
I really hope the Big kid can get back to his former playing style.

Difficult return from back injury motivating Giants guard Shawn Andrews

It was one of the hardest days of Shawn Andrews’ rehab from back surgery.

Not just because of the soft grass that made him feel like he was doing drills in sand or the resistance band restricting his movement, but also because of what was staring him in the face.

“He had to do 75 reps of his pass-set drills and whatever with the bands. It’s tough,” Andrews’ therapist Heather Milligan said Friday by phone from her Select Physical Therapy office in Los Angeles. “It’s about noon and the big Tommy’s Hamburger truck is out there. I have him in the grass, wrapped up, working his tail off and he’s got to do this right in front of this hamburger truck.

“I thought to myself, ‘If he doesn’t fire me after this, he probably should.’ ”

Andrews didn’t fire Milligan. Nor did the 6-4, 330-pounder drop the band and run to the “Shack on Wheels” for a Mega Combo. He stayed right there and finished all of his drills.

Months later, the former first-round pick of the Eagles is back in the NFL – this time with an old division rival, the Giants. One of the best guards in the league from 2005-07, Andrews signed a six-year contract that could be worth as little as $250,000 or as much as $32.5 million.

The disparity in value is what his agent termed the “prove it” factor of the deal. After being limited to only two games total the past two seasons because of back issues, Andrews must show he’s back in top shape and has overcome a battle with depression that coincided with his health woes.

According to Milligan, whom Andrews called a “phenomenal therapist,” the two-time Pro Bowl selection has made considerable strides in both areas.

“There’s been no doubt what he’s wanted to do,” Milligan said. “He’s been through a lot, especially in this last year. He’s physically stronger, he’s also gained a lot of experience and appreciation for things. And it’s going to really serve him well.”

Andrews began working with Milligan because the Eagles wanted Andrews to rehab close to noted Los Angeles-based spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed Andrews’ first surgery in March 2009.

The rehab got off to a rough start when Milligan noticed Andrews wasn’t responding well to the surgery. There was a lack of strength and flexibility in certain parts of his legs that didn’t correspond to the area of his spine (between the L-4 and L-5 vertebrae in his lower back) on which Watkins had operated.

So Milligan recommended Watkins examine Andrews again. It was determined the disc between the L-5 and S-1 vertebrae (the part of the spine near the hips) would have to be partially removed as well.

A second surgery, a second chance for Andrews to decide if a return to the NFL was truly worth it.

“It would have been very easy for him to say, ‘You know what? I think I’m done,’ ” Milligan said. “You have that reality check: ‘Healthy life then my football career.'

“But he decided, ‘Let’s do this other surgery.’ ”

This time Andrews’ rehab went much more smoothly. He showed strength in all areas corresponding to his lower spine and had a more flexible back.

Milligan knew Andrews’ hips were still the key because he’s asked to spring out of two- and three-point stances about 70 times per game. So Milligan, a former Level 10 gymnast and a member of the University of Texas women’s team, ran Andrews through drills while improving her knowledge of how a guard blocks a 3-4 defensive front vs. a 4-3 alignment.

Did Andrews pick up anything about the uneven bars or floor exercise?

“No,” a laughing Milligan said. “But I had another gymnastics patients around the same time as him, so he learned how tough gymnasts are.”

Milligan learned how tough a healthy Andrews can be. After working him for three hours per day, she’d find out he went home and ran on the elliptical machine or did over 400 pushups. During workouts, she would have to stop Andrews from doing too much.

All of this information, and a report of Andrews’ timeliness for training sessions that surely pleased Tom Coughlin, made its way back to the Giants through assistant general manager Kevin Abrams, who remained in contact with Milligan.

On Friday, after all of the hard work of rehabbing and a week of working with former NFL offensive line coach Tom Lovat, Andrews joined the team that had diligently followed his progress.

“They were very supportive,” Milligan said. “And that was a good motivator for Shawn to have that out there that you’ve got a team interested that believes you can do it.”

Shawn Andrews' signing with the Giants results in surprise, optimism from his new teammates
Published: Friday, August 20, 2010, 5:58 PM Updated: Friday, August 20, 2010, 6:49 PM
Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger

ALBANY, N.Y. – Some Giants players knew Shawn Andrews was around their training camp the past few days. There were also those like Chris Canty, who looked at the big guy in the No. 74 jersey during Friday morning’s walk-through and tried to put a name to the face.

“I was like, ‘He kind of looks like Shawn Andrews a little bit,’ ” the Giants’ defensive tackle said. “Then, I’m like, ‘It is Shawn Andrews. Oh man, he got a lot smaller.’

“But I’m glad he’s back in the NFL and I’m happy he’s with the New York Giants.”

Andrews’ arrival Friday surely stirred a mix of emotions from those on the Giants’ roster. Players who aren’t in direct competition were obviously glad to have his potential on board, while guards and tackles looking to gain or hold onto playing time were perhaps secretly worried about their status with the team.

And then, there’s David Diehl, who on Saturday against the Steelers will be playing his second game at left guard because Rich Seubert and Chris Snee are out with injuries. With a healthy Andrews in the fold, Diehl realizes he would have a chance to remain at left tackle and have a more direct competition with last year’s second-round pick William Beatty.

“It was unfortunate the first game and this game I’m getting all my reps at guard because of Snee and Seubert out,” Diehl said. “I’m a team guy and I always have been. But bringing in another guy that can fill in that role helps me out because now I can get my reps and do what I need to do at tackle.”

Okay, so what about Seubert? What was his reaction to the signing of Andrews?

“Whoever we bring in to help this team better is good for the team,” Seubert said. “I got to talk to him today. He seems like a good guy. Everybody needs a chance; this is his chance. And we’re all here to win games.”

Seubert already had indirect competition through Beatty, who was trying to prove his starting at left tackle would be a better option for the team than Seubert’s starting at guard. (Diehl, of course, being the one who would just get plugged into whichever spot was then vacated.) Now, Seubert has direct competition from a former first-round pick who was one of the top guards in the league before his back woes sidelined him.

But competition is nothing new for Seubert, a former undrafted free agent who worked his way up to a starting spot and fought back from a horrific broken leg in 2003.

“There are a lot of people out there that want to play football,” Seubert said, “and I’ve been blessed to be around here.”

Seubert would love to play football – game football. He expects he’ll do just that next Saturday against the Ravens. By the middle of next week, he believes he’ll be cleared to practice without a pad on his broken hand and without limitation.

“Three weeks is the magical day the bone’s supposed to be tacked back down,” Seubert said, “so I have nothing to be worried about.”

Nothing but a two-time Pro Bowl selection breathing down his neck. A player defensive end Osi Umenyiora said was the best tackle he faced in college before Andrews converted to guard with the Eagles.

“When I was with Dallas we played more right and left side and he was a right guard, so Jay Ratliff used to always talk about him,” said Canty, who faced opposing teams’ left guards and tackles as the Cowboys’ starting right end. “And I remember he used to say he had an incredible punch, he was athletic.

“They said, because he wore No. 73, everybody compared him to Larry Allen. I’m not sure anybody’s like Larry Allen; he was a really good player. He was definitely one of the elite guards in the NFL.”

Said Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield, “When he was playing well he was one of the best guards in the league. I don’t know everything that’s transpired, you hear a lot of stories. But when he’s playing at the best of his ability he’s one of the best in the league.

“His combination of power and athleticism. He’s unique in that way, with his size and power. But he’s got great feet. He’s a great athlete and one of the best guards, as you’ll see on Sundays.”

Shawn Andrews signs six year deal with Giants Empty Re: Shawn Andrews signs six year deal with Giants

Post  Big_Pete Mon Aug 23, 2010 2:01 am

Initially I was a little each way about this signing, I thought it was a decent low risk, high reward type of thing.

However, after reading just how much the front office have been keeping an eye on him, plus the feedback about Andrews and what the Giants players had to say about him, I think it bodes really well.

Sure there is a long way to go and Andrews has to prove it on the field. But I wouldn't be surprised if he bounces back big time.

A guy like Andrews would add another dimension to our running game. The one guy who will benefit the most is Jacobs.

This hopefully will mean Diehl can focus at playing tackle, where I think he is better suited (he doesn't get great leverage inside), putting Diehl and Beatty in direct competition for the starting job.

This potentially makes our offensive line much more physical. It also means we can really pound the ball both ways in the running game.

Even if Andrews doesn't crack the starting line up right away, the added competition will really push the other guys. Let's face it, if Andrews can regain even 75% of his former probowl form, he is still an upgrade over Seubert.

I agree. Imlike Seuberts feistiness and effort but it's time to get a true mauler in there.

What I really like is that Seubert is a fighter and isn't going to give up his spot without a real tough fight. Anything Andrews gets is going to be earned the hard way, and so it should be.

I think the real areas where Andrews is an upgrade over Seubert is mobility and power

I also think the Giants environment is actually what Andrews needs.

I've never seen a contract set up like this before with 6 one-year deals, is this common? Has anyone seen one like it before?

I am interested to find the Giants are also looking at Andrews as a possible left tackle

It seems this is not that unusual, Diehl's contract for example includes considerable clauses. For someone coming off injury with possible issues, it makes sense. The way the contract is structured will help ensure there is a lot of motivation to perform. There is no easy ride in this deal. If you perform, you get paid.

Interestingly it seems Andrews has a similar clause in his contract to Diehl regarding bonus money for playing left tackle.

For Giants tackle David Diehl, a clause for some concern
Published: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 6:15 AM Updated: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 9:55 AM
Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger

Giants offensive tackle Shawn Andrews stretches prior to practice Monday. His new deal could intensify the battle between he and David Diehl for the starting left tackle position.

Shawn Andrews’ new contract would provide him with up to an extra $4 million if he becomes the Giants’ left tackle.

If, beginning with the 2011 season, he starts at least 14 games at the position, Andrews stands to earn an additional $1 million the following year. The same would be true for the 2012-14 seasons.

It’s a stipulation that could make anyone who signed such a deal grin. And, in fact, Andrews was grinning when asked Monday about that clause — or at least if it was a point of emphasis in negotiations for his contract, which could pay the former Eagle as much as $40 million over six years.

“It’s a high-profile position,” Andrews said. “And if you’re going to play that position ...”

One needs to be compensated for it.

“Exactly,” Andrews replied.

No one needs to tell David Diehl.

A little more than two years ago, Diehl signed a contract extension through 2013 that included a similar clause. This season, Diehl will make an extra $1 million if he stays at left tackle.

But the money is only one aspect of why Diehl, who has played everywhere on the line but center, is digging in his heels to remain in the spot he’s held since the start of the 2007 season. There’s the prestige of being the guy who protects Eli Manning’s blind side and there’s also a comfort level that had been fleeting for the first four years of Diehl’s career.

All of those factors are why he wasn’t prepared to cede his spot to last year’s second-round pick William Beatty and why Diehl, ever the team player, isn’t planning to step aside in the short- or long-term for Andrews.

“I just feel comfortable at left tackle, I feel that’s my position,” said Diehl, who was back at that spot in practice yesterday after playing guard in the first two preseason games. “I’ve worked this entire offseason just getting ready for it.

“It’s unfortunate Rich (Seubert) and Chris (Snee) were hurt and I had to do some adjusting. But I still got my reps and I’m still working to be the starting left tackle.”

Andrews is simply working to be anywhere on a team right now. Following a pair of back surgeries and a bout with depression, he’s trying to stay on the field after playing only two games in the past two seasons combined.

Monday, he was back on the practice field for the first time in almost a year.

Andrews split reps at two spots: left guard and left tackle. He got beat off the ball by Jay Alford on his first snap in team drills and later whiffed on a block attempt of Chris Canty during 1-on-1s. But Andrews also showed his power and quickness with a terrific “punch” on a block of Dwayne Hendricks that allowed him to control the young defensive tackle.

“I like what he did,” coach Tom Coughlin said of Andrews’ practice.

Switching to the left side would seem to be quite the adjustment for Andrews, considering he played right guard in Philly and right tackle in college at Arkansas. Then again, as Andrews noted, he is left-handed and playing that side “feels more natural.”

As for whether he prefers to play tackle or guard, Andrews has taken a passive approach, saying he’d play wherever. But financially, the best spot for him is tackle. And on Friday he said, “At tackle, I kind of like the aspect of kind of showing my footwork a little bit, kind of showing off, if you will.”

If healthy, Andrews will have to battle a determined Diehl for the right to show off.

“One, I’m more comfortable at tackle than guard,” Diehl said. “But two, it’s the first position I’ve really played extended time in my entire career. Having the last three years under my belt has given me the experience. I’ve got that down and the mentality and the physicalness to play the position at a high level.”
