Giants scouting

Post  Big_Pete on Sat Nov 06, 2010 7:08 am

Here are the college games where Giants scouts have been noticed and the top 2-3 prospects from these schools.

Chattanooga vs. Auburn
Scouts from the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Minnesota Vikings will attend

Nick Fairley, Defensive Tackle, Auburn – Fairley is a Junior, but if the productivity of this season is an indication, his stock is booming. Fairley has been a destructive force in the SEC, racking up 7.5 sacks so far this season. He would be a great 3-technique for any of the teams attending the game.

Cameron Newton, Quarterback, Auburn – Newton is the leading Heisman candidate with his big arm and power rushing. Though he has one more year of eligibility, some think he will declare for the draft early. Could the Minnesota Vikings be a team looking at Newton as a future quarterback?

Lee Ziemba, Offensive Tackle, Auburn – Ziemba is a versatile lineman who can move into guard. A 4 year starter at tackle, Ziemba is fairly quick on his feet, but lacks the arm length and strength to be a proper left tackle. The Giants and Vikings need some help on the O-line, something a midrounder like Ziemba could do.

North Carolina vs. Florida State
Scouts from the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams, and Tennessee Titans will attend.

Richard Quinn, Defensive End, North Carolina – A pure pass rusher, Quinn is a pass rushing 4-3 defensive end or 3-4 outside linebacker who could fit in with Tampa or Carolina at the next level. Right now, he profiles as a high first round pick due to elite pass rushing tools.

Bruce Carter, linebacker, North Carolina – Carter is an undersized, explosive player, Carter can be moved around a defense to be used as a pass rusher. A possible liability in the run game, his best fit could be rushing the passer in San Francisco or Miami.

Deunta Williams, Safety, North Carolina – Williams is a top senior safety prospect for 2011. Though he was suspended for most of the year, his knack for big plays has shown. Though he needs to fix many technique issues, the upside for Deunta is tremendous and would be a nice fit for Tampa or Miami.

TCU vs. Utah
Scouts from the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, and Oakland Raiders will attend.

Marcus Cannon, Offensive Guard, TCU – Cannon is a versatile offensive lineman who can play tackle or guard, likely a late first round pick or early second round pick. His blend of size and athleticism leads to some tremendous upside. The Patriots, Panthers, or Giants could all use a lineman like Cannon.

Brandon Burton, Cornerback, Utah – Burton isn’t well known nationally, but if he declares early, he easily could be a first round pick. Clean technique, solid size and athleticism, and amazing instincts describe Burton. He doesn’t have the toughness you want, but perhaps it can be taught. Would be a great addition in a secondary.

Andy Dalton, Quarterback, TCU – Dalton profiles as a back-up quarterback at the next level. Without elite arm strength or measureables, there isn’t much upside, but Dalton has won a ton of games and is a natural leader. Good developmental back-up for the Giants or Patriots.

There are a few guys in these games that I think would be excellent fits for NYG

1st round
DT Nick Fairley
CB Brandon Burton

2nd round
OLB Bruce Carter
OL Marcus Cannon

Both have 1st round talent, but there will be too much depth for them to go early.

3rd round
OT Lee Ziemba
LB Quan Sturdivant

here are this guys this week

South Carolina vs. Florida

Scouts from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and Houston Texans will attend.

Janoris Jenkins, CB, Florida – Jenkins is only a junior, but he is a huge playmaker in the secondary. He can get beat by sound technicians at receiver, but if someone plays sloppy or a pass is errant, Jenkins will take advantage with a big play. Houston would love to have him opposite of Kareem Jackson, and he could also fit in Green Bay too.

Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida – Pouncey’s brother Maurkice has played extremely well for Pittsburgh this season, and though he is not the same type of prospect, Mike could also be an early round pick in the NFL Draft. Pouncey is struggling at center this year and is probably best suited for the guard position. Pouncey needs some refinement in terms of his technique, but overall, he profiles as a potential starter a the next level. In reality, any of the teams at this game could be looking at Pouncey on Draft Day.

Cliff Matthews, DE, South Carolina – A hard working player, Matthews is a quick defensive end with big upside. He has never quite put it together and may even end up moving to 3-4 outside linebacker. He would be a solid fit for the Packers or Texans.
