Brandon Jacobs may not be the #1 RB? Empty Brandon Jacobs may not be the #1 RB?

Post  Big_Pete Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:42 am

from insidefootball.com

Speaking of Ingram, he sidestepped a question about whether Brandon Jacobs is number one going into camp. “In all fairness you have to start over. They all have something to give; they all contributed in their own way. You’re looking at for the most part that they are all competing for the same job, starting positions as well as the other positions where they could help us. The game plan in trying to figure out what they can do for us depends on who we are playing, and as Kevin [Gilbride] said, whoever has the hot hand and who is ready to play. That’s what gives these guys motivation, they can’t wait to get on the field and get an opportunity to play. We’re really not worried about who starts, because the opportunities will rise, it’s going to happen and we’re going to try and flow with who we play and keep a good balance as far as who is coming on the field and try to keep people fresh as best we can.”

As if that’s not enough of a blow to Jacobs’ campaign for a new contract (which is apparently not on the horizon), when Ingram was asked if the team planned to use the running back by committee approach again this year, he said, “Definitely. We’re going to try and have a committee as best we can, try to keep people healthy, and the other teams off balance.”

It sounds to me like the front office is looking at moving towards other options at RB.

It is interesting that at the same time Gilbride is saying that he is expecting big things from our running game.

In ome ways that makes decent sense; I think Bradshaw, Ward and Ware would be alot more dynamic.

Don't get me wrong I really like Brandon Jacobs.

With Shockey's departure, I would like to see the coaching staff consider moving Jacobs to TE (or at least H-Back initially); I think that is a better fit for Jacobs' height, size and speed. I think he could excel under Michael Pope's tutelage.

I don't think it means the Giants want to move on. I think the Giants saw what worked last year and they'll do it again this year.

IMO, moving Jacobs is silly. He adds a different element to the running game. Taking him away from that hurts the team, as a whole.

I think the idea is to pick up where we left off last year - getting contributions out of both of them....but I also think they see Bradshaw as more of a weapon - and I agree. Combine that fact with this being Jacobs final year on his contract and that Ward would be a perfectly fine #2 back and yes, change could be in the air for next season.

For this year, my guess is, they split carries pretty evenly at first, with Bradshaw emerging as the main guy by season's end.

And I don't see Jacobs as a TE or H back. Changing positions is easier on defense, like between DL & LB or CB & safety but offensive skill position changes are rare.

We will be using a rotation, and Jacobs will be part of it; I just think he role could be a little less as other guys step up.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jacobs get some reps at FB in certain packages in training camp.

as far as TE, that is likely a pipe dream but I do think that would have been his best spot.

No way are the Giants moving on past Jacobs. Hes the number 1, period. Yea the coach isn't going to come out and say it on the first day of camp because hes got 3-4 good running backs who are all chomping at the bit to start and get more playing time.

And as far as TE goes, no way, Jacobs has stone hands, Tony if you're reading this I'm sorry but it's true, the dude can't catch.

OK, Hamp, this will be a gentleman's bet between us. I say they split time, with Jacobs maybe getting a little more early but by mid-season, Bradshaw is the main guy. Watching the playoff run over and over, Bradshaw had become our best RB.
