most likely this is a salary cap move, but if we could sign Gibril for a reasonable contract is he worth pursuing in free agency?

Is he appreciably better than Butler?

Can't say that this move really surprises me since he was so overpaid when he went to Oakland.

I think Philips, Wilson, and Johnson would make a nice trio going into camp but I'm not so sure the Giants would pay him anything even close to what the raiders initially did. I think we have bigger priorities such as signing our qb and rb.

However, It will be interesting to see if the Giants do pursue.

here is some comments from Jerry Reese and also inside football's Patricia Traina

On whether they’d welcome Gibril Wilson, who was cut by Oakland, back:
Jerry Reese: We’ll investigate everything. You know us, we try to investigate everything.

Patricia Traina: Editor’s Note: I’ve been asked several times now if I think Wilson will be back. My answer is no. Wilson never really gave the Giants a chance to match any offers he received, and I remember getting the sense from him that he couldn’t wait to leave the team. So I doubt he comes back as the team would probably offer him a minimum contract at best -- even if they make an offer.

Patricia had some other thoughts about a possible safety aquisition, but you really should check it out on their site

Looks like Miami is the next team to overpay imo for Wilson's services.
Don't get me wrong, Gibril is a decent player but he's not as good as teams are paying him. A 27.5 million, 5 year deal is still too much.
If Miami cuts him at the end of next year then it will mean that Gibril made 24 million dollars in guaranteed money in only a 2 year span with 2 different teams.

I think Miami overpaid as well

but Gibril did have a decent year in Oakland and was likley cut to save cash. and just over $5million a year is reasonable for a decent starter.

Gibril is a huge upgrade for their secondary and will likely be a key veteran leader
