UPDATED: 5:54 p.m.

Romeo Crennel, the former Giants assistant coach and the director of the Patriots’ Super Bowl-winning defenses, is expected to be the next man up in the GIants’ defensive coordinator search.

The Giants have contacted the 62-year-old Crennel to let him know they’re interested in him, and he’s told them he’s interested in them too, according to two sources familiar with the Giants’ plans.

His agent, Joe Linta, told the Daily News that Crennel “is interested” in the job and confirmed that they have heard from the Giants. But he added that Crennel won’t be back from his vacation until Monday so nothing will happen until then. He apparently will be available to be interviewed next week, but the following week he’s committed to coaching the East team at the annual East-West Shrine game in Orlando on Jan. 23.

The Giants are also not the only team pursuing Crennel.

“We’ve had a few calls from teams,” Linta said in an e-mail. “But nothing concrete as yet.”

One of those teams is the Kansas City Chiefs, who would like to speak to him next week about their defensive coordinator job, according to reports.

Crennel was a Giants assistant coach from 1981-92 and he served on the same staff as Coughlin, who was the Giants’ receivers coach from 1988-90. He was also Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator in New England from 2001-04 - - a four-season span that included three Super Bowl championships.

Meanwhile, Coughlin interviewed former Buffalo Bills interim coach Perry Fewell today, but he apparently left without any kind of offer. Fewell, who was Coughlin’s defensive backs coach in Jacksonville from 1998-2002, is expected to interview for the defensive coordinator’s job in Chicago next week.

“I think they’re nothing more than Facebook friends at this point,” Linta said. “They’re just exchanging phone numbers.”

Still, the Giants intentions are clear and Crennel will be available to be interviewed next week, if the Giants want to bring him him. The following week he’s committed to coaching the East team at the annual East-West Shrine game in Orlando on Jan. 23.
