Giants thoughts 20th April - (no trade for a veteran WR)
Here is my thoughts if the Giants do not trade for a WR (Boldin or Edwards)
(Comments from nfl.com)
Draft
29 Eben Britton, Arizona [6-6, 309, 5.16]
"Britton's postseason workouts have made him one of the risers on draft boards. He operated mainly in a spread offense, which some coaches have said makes it easy to evaluate linemen because they are forced to play in space. Britton is a strong run blocker and possible right tackle in the NFL. However, he has shown better-than-expected feet in workouts, and there is little doubt that he'd be a better-than-adequate left tackle."
Britton gives the Giants much needed OT depth. While he could push Diehl inside to LG, he could also end up at RT if McKenzie's back continues to be an issue.
32 WR Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina [6-0 3/4, 212, 4.50]
"The Atlantic Coast Conference's leading receiver is an exceptional talent in the mold of a young Michael Irvin. A big, physical receiver with extraordinary pass-catching skills, Nicks has a keen understanding of how to use his body to create separation. Despite the fact that he lacks elite speed, Nicks has all of the requisite skills to be a productive No. 1 receiver as a pro. Other receivers might be drafted higher because of superior measurables, but few can match Nicks' overall ability."
Nicks gives the Giants a big, physical WR with great intangibles and work ethic. Nicks stock has slipped a little with concerns over his speed and weight fluctuation, but he is a steal here.
Giants trade #45, #91 to Pittsburgh for #32
60 S Pat Chung, Oregon [5-11 1/4, 212, 4.53]
"Chung is an accomplished and versatile safety. He has good coverage skills for his height and is fast enough to make up ground if he gets beat in coverage. Chung is more of a strong safety but can play free safety, depending on the responsibilities. He's also a tone-setting hitter."
Chung gives the Giants that intimading prescence in the secondary that can really set the tone for the defence. Chung gives the Giants a quality long term pairing at safety with Kenny Phillips.
100 WR Ramses Barden, Cal Poly [6-6, 229, 4.61]
Mel Kiper: "He has a lot of potential. Big kid at 6-6, 228. Physically imposing. He led his team in receiving four straight years. Averaged nearly 19 yards his senior year. He did a lot of great things at the I-AA level. What he's going to have to adjust to is these CBs in the NFL. Making sight adjustments in your routes. It's going to be a transition period. He has ability, no question. He was a free safety in high school in addition to being a WR. Played volleyball, ran track, played basketball. He was a good prep athlete"
Barden is a big, athletic WR to complement our other guys. In particualar he will be a huge weapon in the red zone. Being a small school guy he will be raw.
124. WLB Jonathan Casillas, Wisconsin [6-1 1/8, 228, 4.50]
Casillas is coming of injury, but if he checks out ok, he has everything you look for in a WLB. He is strong at the point of attack, very fast, a very good tackler, great intincts and very good coverage skills (some teams are seriously looking at him as a potential safety!). Casillas will develop behind boley and be a huge asset on special teams.
151 S Courtney Greene, Rutgers [6-0 1/4, 212, 4.54]
Greene is a solid safety who could play either position for the Giants. He also provides very good special teams
164 RB Glen Coffee, Alabama [6-0 1/8, 209, 4.58]
A good RB prospect to add depth and competition for Bradshaw and Ware.
200 K/P Graham Gano, Florida St [6-0 3/8, 194, 5.00]
Gano is a Punter turned Kicker with a huge kick (doing both roles). His college coach called him the team MVP. Gano can develop behind Feagles as Punter and also provides depth/insurance for Tynes (who has had injury problems)
238 CB Joe Burnett, Central Florida [5-9 3/8, 192, 4.57]
Burnett gives the Giants more CB depth and an experienced punt and kick returner. He also has exceptional ball skills so will be vaulable in nickle and dime packages. Being a small school guy he will be raw.[b]
