Giants Place WR Domenik Hixon on Waivers

Giants WR Domenik Hixon was waived/injured today, nearly two weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a season-ending torn ACL on June 15 when his leg twisted awkwardly under him during a drill in the team's new stadium.

Hixon, who had signed a one-year $1.68M tender as a restricted free agent this past off-season, will have 24 hours to clear waivers. If following that period no team claims his rights, the Giants will either add him to the injured reserve list, where he’ll be eligible to collect his full base salary, or offer the receiver an injury settlement representing a percentage of his scheduled base salary.

Taking Hixon’s place on the 80-man roster is WR/KR Adam Jennings, 5-9, 176 lbs out of Fresno State. Jennings is a former sixth round draft pick by Atlanta in 2006 who was waived by the Falcons in 2008 and acquired by Detroit, who cut him aft the end of training camp last year but was re-signed by the Lions on September 30 before being placed on injured reserve on October 5 with an ankle injury.

Jennings, who was waived by Detroit on December 29 and who had been a free agent, has returned 54 punts for 337 yards (6.2 yards per return average) with a long of 37 and no touchdowns throughout his career. He’s also returned 25 kickoffs for 559 yards (22.4 average) and a long of 61.

As a receiver, Jennings, who has played in 46 games, has six catches for 62 yards and one touchdown.

At Fresno State, Jennings was an All –WAC first team selection as a kickoff returner in his senior season, and an academic All-WAC pick for four years.

Hixon waived/injured, WR Jennings signed Empty Re: Hixon waived/injured, WR Jennings signed

The Giants have added another player to the mix to fill the void in the kick return game created by the season-ending injury to Domenik Hixon. The team yesterday signed Adam Jennings, who in five NFL seasons arrives with the reputation as a very solid special teamer in all facets.

Jennings takes the place on the roster of Hixon, who tore a knee ligament last month during the first-ever mini-camp practice in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Hixon underwent surgery about 10 days ago and the Giants yesterday waived him. Once he clears waivers, Hixon will be placed on injured reserve. Hixon was a reliable receiver, but his best asset was as the team's top kickoff and punt returner.

A receiver and former 2006 sixth-round draft pick of the Falcons, Jennings played at Fresno State and also played for the Lions in his NFL career. The 5-foot-9, 176-pound Jennings will be looked at as a return man. He has averaged 22.4 yards on 25 kickoff returns in the NFL and 6.2 yards on 54 punt returns. Jennings played in only one game for the Lions last season before hurting his ankle and spending the remainder of the year on IR.

Jennings is considered not only a decent return man but also a very solid all-around special teams player, especially strong in covering kicks.

it makes sense that we bring in a guy who excels on special teams and can return kicks.

It is very clear the front office are still looking for someone to do the return duties.
