thoughts on 2011 Giants (sept 2010) Empty thoughts on 2011 Giants (sept 2010)

Post  Big_Pete Thu Sep 30, 2010 7:20 pm

Here is my currenb thoughts on the 2011 Giants.

I am expecting a new CBA and our coaching staff to turn things around

The biggest need at the moment is overhauling the offensive line.

Free Agency

Priority extensions - Steve Smith, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, Matthias Kiwanuka and Barry Cofield
These guys may not be amongst the league's best, but they are solid, experienced starters. The Giants will continue to retain their key players and building from the foundation we have . Smith and Kiwanuka will not hit the open market, both are prime candidates for a franchise tag if need be.

Other Resignings
Koets, Hixon, Ware, Grant, M Johnson and Blackburn give us solid guys to build, all stand a good chance of being back with reasonable contracts

Cuts:
McKenzie, Seubert and O'Hara. McKenzie and Seubert are playing to the level of their current contracts. These are the prime positions that need upgrading.
O'Hara is a solid player, but age and injuries are catching up with him. He is a good player to keep around for his last year and mentor the young linemen. O'Hara isn't the physical kind of player we need particularly with two 3-4 teams in our division. The solution is to move Snee to Center and plug Andrews and Blalock at the guard spots, Diehl at RT and Beatty at LT, giving the Giants the nasty physical line that is badly needed for their physical style of play.
This frees up around $9.75m ($4.3m, $2m and $3.45) in cap room to let us retool.

Notes:
- Jacobs is a candidate to be cut, but if he remains a potent downhill RB. He does need a much improved offensive line. Cutting Jacobs would only free up around 800k in cap money, so it makes sense to keep him for one more year.
- With Osi locked up to a reasonable contract, there is no way Reese will let him go unless we get a good trade offer (2nd round draft pick or better). It is likely Umenyiora sees out the remainder of his contract.

Free Agency Signings from other teams

TE Zach Miller, Oakland
Miller isn't a flashy receiving TE, but he is a reliable receiver and dependable blocker. This moves Boss to #2 TE where he can hold up a bit better and get better mis-matches. This lets us use more 2 TE sets and also considerably helps out tackles in pass protection if need be.

MLB Barrett Ruud, Tampa Bay
Ruud is a dependable tackler with great range and leadership. Ruus is very upset with his contract situation. There are a few LBs hitting free agency, Ruud gives us a dependable MLB to anchor the defense.

G/T Justin Blalock, Atlanta
Blalock has been a key part of the Falcons line. Blalock can play either Guard or Right Tackle.

Draft

Going by the current draft order (27 Sept), the Giants would be picking at #7

7. CB Prince Amukamara, Nebraska (6-1, 205, 4.45)
The best CB in a very talented class. This upgrades our secondary for the forseeable future.

39. T DeMarcus Love, Arkansas (6-5, 315, 5.18)
We need to upgrade depth at Tackle and Love gives us a future starter.

69. RB DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma (6-1, 207, 4.50)
RBs slip on draft day and this will happen again with the popular underclassmen runners. With Jacobs gone, this gives us a good compliment to Bradshaw.

103. FB/TE DJ Williams, Arkansas (6-2, 251, 4.62)
Williams is short for a TE, but he is a very good blocker and a genuine weapon in the passing game. He gives us a good option to upgrade over Hedgecock.

167. Traded to Minnesota for Sage Rosenfels, Darius Reynaud

199. C Brandon Fusco, Slippery Rock (6-5, 305, 5.25)

231. RS Leon Berry, Mississippi St (6-0, 205, 4.50)
