Bad News! Jake Ballard injury is worse, he had microfracture surgery

Post  Sect128Mike on Wed Apr 11, 2012 11:25 am

The timeline for Giants tight end Jake Ballard’s return to action is a little longer than originally expected.

Ballard was already a good bet to start the year on the PUP list because of the torn ACL he suffered during the Super Bowl, but he also needs to recover from microfracture surgery performed to repair damaged cartilage in his left knee. Ballard told Jeff Roberts of the Bergen Record that he thinks the cartilage injury came when he tried to get back on the field after originally injuring the knee during the fourth quarter of the win over the Patriots.

“I definitely felt it rip and heard it pop. I felt like I ripped everything and broke everything,” Ballard said of the on-field injury. “My knee just collapsed, I definitely tore [my ACL] on the field. I’d say [the cartilage damage] probably happened on the sideline from trying to run with no ACL. But I don’t regret trying to get back in the game. It’s the biggest game in any football player’s career.”

Ballard was though to need eight to nine months to recover from the torn ACL and, per Roberts, the microfracture surgery adds another six weeks to the recovery time. That puts his ability to return at all during the 2012 season into doubt and the magnitude of the injury means it won’t be easy for Ballard to come all the way back in future seasons.

Not pleased to hear this. I don;t know much about this type of knee surgery, but on the foot its been unpredictable. I asked at a few sites to see what I can learn. Anyone here know about this type of surgery?

I'm not familiar with the injury but it doesn't sound good and I'm really not expecting Ballard to make much of any kind of impact next season because of it.
Certainly glad that the Giants picked up Bennett. I still like Pascoe too. Between these two and coaching up Hopkins I have no doubt we can get by as long as they can stay relatively healthy.

I would not be surprised if we do not take a TE in the first 4 rounds with one of our 5 picks therein. I like Bennett, but we need depth here. Maybe there is a vet FA who we can get cheap.

Microfracture surgery is not too good.

These type of injuries were career ending not that long ago.

Players can come back from it, but it is a long haul.

The other factor we be whether he loses any speed or agility, he didn't have tons of it to start with.

I think we will draft a TE, the guy who I think i the best fit is Michael Egnew (Missouri) in the 3rd or 4th round.

I would be VERY surprised if the Giants are high on Mike Egnew. He is really not a TE, just a big WR. He simply can not block. He was never taught blocking technique at Mizzou because his role int he offense never required him to lay a block other than out in a bubble screen. He does not have the frame to add much more weight, so I do not think he can ever be a really good blocker. At this point he is just big WR who is not fast enough to be a down field threat. I just don't see it in this offense. We are set at WR in the slot and down the field. We need a true TE who can lay a block out of the 3 point stance when the pass protection calls for it and be a good threat to catch.

I still think Ballard will start the season on the pup and be ready by mid season. I have higher hopes for Beckum. With Bear and MartyB I think we look later in the draft around the 6th or 7th round for a TE. Lets remember, Boss was a 5th round pick, Bear and Ballard were undrafted. Mike Pope can work magic.

Just because he didnt block much, doesn't mean he can't develop it. He does have a very good attitude and work ethic.

I look at the three TEs we have drafted in the first 3 rounds, Shockey, Shancoe and Beckum. All were more recievng TEs coming out of college, both Shockey and Shiancoe became very solid blockers, the same can be said of Boss actually.

I think Egnew has the kind of tools we like and with Pope's tutelage could become very effective. as far as size, heck he is 6'5, 252 already, can run a 4.62 40 time, 7.02 3 cone, has a respecable 21 strength reps, along with a 37.5" vertical and 11'03" broad jump.
I dont get how his physical tools are lacking.

lets compare Egnew to Beckum who we did draft around where Egnew's value is likely to be.
Beckum was 6'3", 239, he did have 28 strength reps a 4.61 40 and 7.05 3 cone, a 38" vert and 9'10" broad jump.

Personally I think it is a little short sighted to say we wont look at Egnew, if anything he is the kind of recieving TE we have drafted in the past with a view to developing blocking skills. I really wouldn't be surprised if we picked him up in the 3rd or 4th.

I am not sure about Ballard, but I'm hopeful.

The later rounds are very possible, one guy I am watching is Taylor Thompson at Southern Methodist. He is 6'6", 266, 4.58 and was a DE in college, buthe has worked out at TE at his pro day and has very good hands. He seems like the ideal kind of late round developmental prospect we look for.

I'm not sure I agree about his work ethic. He is not known as a tape room guy. I'm not sayign he is lazy or anything, just that he is not one of those guys known to work mroe than is necessary, like Cam Newton. I think he has an average work ethic, just what you would expect from a star football player, but nothing more than the majority of players.

Shockey was actually a great blocker in college, he just hated doing it because he wanted to pass catch, but he was well known as a forceful blocker who had the ability to drop DEs and big LBs with a push and run. Shancoe and Beckum never became good blockers IMO, but again, both were rated far ahead of Egnew.

I have no doubt Egnew will be a solid pass catchign TE. But he has the body of a WR. Size and frame are different. He is long, which makes it harder to bulk up, plus he has long legs, which raises his center and makes it harder for him to ever be a good blocker.
His physical tools, and his 40 is faster than you think, make him a big WR.

I do not think we won't look at Egnew, I just do not think we will draft him. I would be very surprised if we did. Actually, I would not like it. I'm tired of wasting picks on TEs who don't fit our offense. We need blockers who can go out and catch from time to time. We are not running the Pats TE first offense.
