Giants | Burress present Wednesday
Wed, 11 Jun 2008 10:41:20 -0700

Tom Rock, of New York Newsday, reports New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress was on the sidelines during the team's offseason workout Wednesday, June 11. Burress said it was a business decision that led him to attend the practice. Burress and the team have been in contract negotiations for a long time and he said he would have been able to practice if he was happy with the progress of the negotiations. Burress did not indicate whether he would attend training camp under his current contract

Burress reports to minicamp, tells Giants he's not practicing

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Star wide receiver Plaxico Burress is refusing to practice because the New York Giants haven't renegotiated a new contract since winning the Super Bowl.

Burress reported to Giants Stadium for the mandatory minicamp Wednesday. But he says he told the coaching staff he won't workout without a new deal.

The wide receiver says he believes he has three years left on his current pact.

Burress battled through an ankle injury last season and rarely practiced during the week leading up to games. He played and started in all 16 games, finishing with 70 receptions for 1,025 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns. He caught the game-winning touchdown in the Giants' stunning 17-14 victory over the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Where does that leave the Giants?

How much does he want?

How much should the Giants pay for a 30yr old whose injury problems prevented him from practicing last year? Bearing in mind other guys like Chis Snee, Brandon Jacobs and possibly Osi Umenyiora also deserve extenstions/pay rises

Reese: "It's Internal Business"

GM Jerry Reese just issued a very brief statement to the media regarding the situation with Plaxico Burress, saying it was an internal matter and will remain that way. Suffice to say, Reese, who's normally very friendly and laid back, was not at all happy and in fact his demeanor could be described as irritated.

Also for what it's worth, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck were sidelined this afternoon, replaced by Renaldo Wynn and Dave Tollefson. And I didn't see Antonio Pierce taking snaps in the afternoon session either -- Chase Blackburn took his snaps. Also, RB Derrick Ward was sidelined.

Stay tuned for more as I'll have some highlights from the field later today and any remaining late breaking news on the drama unfolding off the field.

Rosenhaus Speaks about Burress and Shockey

We heard from Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for both WR Plaxico Burress and TE Jeremy Shockey, a few moments ago. Rosenhaus confirmed that he is having discussions with the Giants on a new contract for Burress. “We are in discussions with the Giants as it relates to contract extension for Plaxico, and we are hopeful of getting something worked out here in the near future.”

As for Shockey, who did not even come out for the morning practice, causing some to speculate if something was up, Rosenhaus said, “There’s really nothing new for me to add on Shockey. He’s not practicing right now because he’s still rehabilitating his ankle and he still has some work to do. He’s not in a position to practice at this time.”

When asked if Shockey’s absence from the field had anything to do with trade discussions, Rosenhaus said, “That had nothing to do with it. Jeremy has stated his position that any discussion and his relationship with the team is something that he would like to keep between us and the club and I’m obviously going to respect and honor that. So I don’t have anything additional to add in his case.”

Burres: Pay Me

Updating my earlier entry, WR Plaxico Burress is present at today's mini camp, but he did not practice. It was initially believed that he was resting because of the knee and ankle injuries he battled through last year.

Wrong. Burress says he's healthy and he isn't practicing because he wants a new contract. Burress has three years remaining on the original six-year, $25M contract he signed with the Giants. He's due to make base salaries of $3.25, $3.5 and $3.75M.

As for whether he'll be at training camp if he doesn't get a new contract, Burress wouldn't say, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't show up.

I am a bit each way on this one. Burress does deserve a reasonable pay rise

But the Giants are generally reasonable and like to do things behind closed doors. The fact that Burress has been very public about it hints to me that he is trying to up the Ante.

I suspect Burress is trying to get the kind of contract that the Giants are unwilling to meet; quite possibly due to both his age and injury history.

Just idle speculation (slow football day and all), but I wonder if we should consider trade options (most likely a player).

There would be quite a few teams interested in Burress and would be willing to pay him the kind of money he is after

Hell no. Giants would never do it.

Your probably right

I guess I am a bit annoyed about Burress's tactics and have reservations on what he will do if he doesn't get the kind of money he wants.

Considering Burress's age and injury history I don't think we should pay him a huge pay rise.

it is interesting that both Shockey and Burress are signed to reasonable long term contracts, both are unhappy with their situations and both are managed by Drew Rosenhaus

Burress isn't indespensible; although there would be an impact, the team could get by. Worse case scenario, the talented young guys will have to step up, which they are very capable of doing.

Anyways this entire thing should have been done privately

It is a slow football day after all Smile

He deserves more money, his original contract was a steal, he has proven himself and was quiet and productive all last year while playing hurt the whole time. Give him more money, now tht Strahan is gone there's money available.

I think Burress deserves a reasonable increase, but it depends on how much he wants. The fact that Burress has gone public (becasue discussions aren't progressing how he would like) indicates that he is asking for substantially more than the giants are willing to pay.

Hopefully a compromise will be reached soon.

I would prefer to see guys like Snee extended; in my opinion that is a priority.

Osi is another that probably deserves a reasonable pay rise.
