Giants WR thoughts - 17th June

Post  Big_Pete on Wed Jun 17, 2009 6:29 am

It is still very early, but going by what we have seen so far.....

Somewhat surprisingly, he has been the most Impressive WR so far this offseason.
I have always thought Moss might be another quality late bloomer (very much like Corey Webster)
But Moss is certainly perfoming consistently well, beating guys and getting deep.

I can't help feeling he (amd most of our other WRs are on the cusp of breakout seasons)

How the WRs are shaping up

We know Hixon can perform very solidly at WR and will likely be the starter at WR1

Going by current form Sinorice Moss will get a very good shot at being the starting #2 WR

Steve Smith will be mr consitent as the slot Receiver and will work into the mix alot

Hakeem Nicks has the talent and will work himself into the rotation as the season progresses

Mario Manningham has shown flashes, but isn't quite up there with Hixon, Moss and Smith (yet), but will certainly get his share of reps

Ramsees Barden will need time to develop, but should get some reps, particularly in goal line situation.

If these guys continue to develop as expected and can stay healthy *touch wood*, then I really can't see any of the other WRs making the roster.
The current group we have is very very impressive; competition is wide open, plus you add Beckum and Boss into the mix and you have a potentially a very dangerous passing attack - all of whom have talent as will get alot better with more opporunity.

Interestingly Eli commented on the speed of Moss and Manningham, saying you don't have to make the read if they can beat their man. This year our WRs have legitimate speed which we haven't had in previous years.

Think about it from a defensive point of view,

The Giants have a 4 pronged offense

1. Power running game of Hedgecock, Jacobs, Ware and Brown will hurt you and wear you down - needs physical players to defend

2. Fast, precision passing game of Hixon, Moss, Smith, Manningham and Beckham - needs faster athletic guys to cover

3. Physical passing game of Nicks, Barden and Boss (what Plax, Toomer used to do) - needs bigger DBs to cover

4. Speed, Pecision running game with Bradshaw and Ware - exploits bigger, slower or tired front 7

The key will be our QB and offensive line, but they are very good (under rated) players and both spots have great depth.

The depth of talent will allow Gibride and Coughlin to mix things up really well with alot of different looks and rotation (at skill positions) to keep guys fresh - it will be very, very tough for teams to defend

Seriously, don't be surprised if Eli has a breakout MVP type season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants had one of the best offenses in the league (although very under rated at this stage)

I still think Tyree has a strong chance at making the team. Especially if there becomes an injury somewhere.

These four are locks:
Smith
Hixon
Nicks
Barden

These three are questionable:
Tyree (Special teams are better with him than without him)
Manningham (youth and vertical speed likely keeps him around)
Moss (Very little value on specials and still has much to prove in real game situations)

I think Tyree is facing an uphill battle

generally he is very limited in the passing game and is there for sepcial teams

I don't see the Giants passing up on a talented young WR who is expected to contribute in the future in a big way, particularly when there is alot of good young LBs, DBs etc who can do the job.

Don't get me wrong, I like Tyree, unfortunately it will be a numbers game.
