Giants trade for QB and RB/PR
Giants.com
One day before the NFL's mandatory roster cutdown, the Giants tonight added two players when they acquired quarterback Sage Rosenfels and running back/punt returner Darius Reynaud from the Minnesota Vikings.
The players were acquired for draft compensation. The deal is contingent on both players passing physicals on Saturday.
The dual acquisition would fill two needs: a quarterback with NFL experience to back up Eli Manning and an above-average punt returner. The team placed quarterback Jim Sorgi on injured reserve this week with a shoulder injury and moved Rhett Bomar, who has never thrown a regular season pass, up to No. 2. The Giants lost Domenik Hixon, their outstanding punt returner, when he suffered a knee injury that required surgery in a minicamp practice on June 15.
Rosenfels, 6-4 and 225 pounds, is a 10-year NFL veteran. He has played in 32 regular season games with 12 starts and completed 351 of 562 passes (62.5 percent) for 4,156 yards, 30 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He has been sacked only 19 times and his career passer rating is 81.2.
In the just-concluded preseason, Rosenfels led the Vikings with 31 completions in 51 attempts for 402 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and an exceptional rating of 111.7.
Because of the arrival of Brett Favre in Minnesota, Rosenfels did not play at all in the 2009 season. He was acquired by the Vikings in a trade with the Houston Texans, for whom he started 10 games in 2007-08. Rosenfels also started one game in both 2004 and 2005 with the Miami Dolphins.
Rosenfels entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Redskins in 2001, the 109th overall selection. He was the sixth quarterback taken (Michael Vick and Drew Brees were among those chosen ahead of him). The next quarterback to come off the board was Jesse Palmer, who was taken by the Giants with the 125th selection.
Just prior to the 2002 season, Rosenfels was traded to the Dolphins for a draft choice. He spent four years in Miami before moving to Houston, where he stayed three seasons.
Rosenfels, a native of Mauoketa in rural eastern Iowa, was a two-year starter at Iowa State.
Reynaud, 5-9 and 200 pounds, was fourth in the NFC last season with a 10.3-yard average on 30 punt returns. He had three returns of more than 30 yards. He also brought back four kickoffs for 90 yards.
This preseason, Reynaud rushed for 60 yards on 18 carries, with a long run of 12 yards. He also caught two passes for 13 yards.
A wide receiver at West Virginia University - where he caught 12 touchdown passes in 2007 - Reynaud joined the Vikings as a rookie free agent in 2008. In two years he played in 14 games and did not catch a pass. Following the 2009 season, Reynaud switched to running back.
Reynaud was a star at Hahnville High School in Louisiana.

Here is the details of the trade.
The Giants will get Rosenfels and RB Darius Reynaud (who is a kickoff specialist). In return, they will send the Vikings their fifth round draft pick in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012.

Nice move by Jerry Reese, it fixes two of our biggest needs
now all we need is upgraded CB depth

Hopefully we can get that 5th rd pick back via trade again.
Not sure how long Sage is signed for but he isn't going to be ready to see the field for probably 4-5 games in. He will have a lot to learn in a very short time.
If Eli goes down in the first couple of games then I would rather see Bomar take over.
I still find it hard to believe that the Giants could not find a kick/punt returner with their starting 53.
I don't know much about Darius Reynaud but to me it is a wasted roster spot because we certainly don't need another running back.
ehh.. Can't say I'm overly excited.
