Giants agree to terms with David Baas
Giants add ex-49ers center David Baas
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 27, 2011, 10:09 AM
On Wednesday the Giants said goodbye to three veteran offensive linemen. Now they’ve said hello to a new one.
The Giants have agreed to terms with former 49ers center David Baas, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Baas has started all 16 games for the 49ers each of the last two seasons. He’ll take the place of Shaun O’Hara, who is on the way out after seven seasons as the Giants’ center.
Losing Baas will be a blow to the 49ers who were expected to make re-signing him a high priority.

LT- Beatty,
LG- Diehl, Petrus
C- Baas, Koets
RG- Snee, Boothe
RT- McKenzie, Brewer
Thats what its looking like so far. A vet OT signing is possible but with Diehls ability to play LT it shouldn't be high priority. And Boothe can play any of the positions effectively.

Diehl doesn't have the speed to play LT anymore only in emergencies should he play there, hopefully Beatty can stay healthy.

Re: Giants agree to terms with David Baas
I guess Beatty getting hurt would constitute as an emergency. If thats the 9 OL we take on roster, then Diehl would be the best option to replace Beatty if he's hurt.
We could potentially add a vet. swing tackle to back up Beatty and McKenzie or since we are cap strapped we could reshuffle the line in the scenario of injury and move Diehl around.
We have flexibility and thats something the Giants have liked along their OLine for a long time now.

I know a guy who is a big 49ers fan, he said that Bass was mediocore until he was moved to C this season.

I didn't know that. I haven't found out too much to be honest, but I heard Baas was a very good guard and ok center
But if Baas is a good center, its a no brainer

I don't have much time so I'll make this quick.
Baas was the number 12 overall rated Center. He is a top ten run blocker. And a top 5 screen blocker (we love to run screens). All that in his FIRST year starting at Center. Tell me thats not impressive. Baas has a chance to develop into a very good center especially with one of the best Oline coaches in the league and two probowl caliber guards sitting next to him.

I completely believe you Vin, thanks for the heads up.
He also has that nasty physical style we lacked at center

Re: Giants agree to terms with David Baas
here is what scouts inc says about Baas
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=8447
After securing a starting role as a guard the former second round draft
pick was moved to center for the 2010 season where he started all 16
games. He is a thick wide body with above average initial quickness and
adequate agility and body control. He is more of a mauler and brawler
than finesse type of blocker but can dominate opponents once he gets his
hands on them. He is not a natural knee bender but will bring his feet
with him to sustain blocks and has the kind of temperament and effort
that allows him to finish most blocks off. He has come a long ways when
it comes to understanding angles and techniques which allow him to
sustain blocks better than when he used to rely on strength alone. He
does a good job of sinking his hips to hunker down and stop the bull
rush and will win most strength contests.

Theres no word out yet on the official pay but I hear its close to 4 years 15-20 million. We should know tonight or tomorrow morning.
He gets better each year. He's a mauler with quick feet and should hold up well vs these 3-4 fronts. Pass blocking needs improvement but nothing Pat can't fix. He'll fit right in with our guys.

Re: Giants agree to terms with David Baas
Baas is a very good fit for what we do and the type of guys we like.
It will also help our power running game and O'Hara got over powered a lot by 3-4 NTs, Baas will resolve this.
As it stands our line is shaping up nicely
RT - Kareem McKenzie, Jarriel King
RG - Chris Sne, Kevin Boothe
C - David Baas, Adam Koets
LG - David Diehl, Mitch Petrus, Jamon Meredith
LT - Will Beatty, James Brewer
thats a pretty good bunch

Re: Giants agree to terms with David Baas
Sounds like a good move as long as the money is right. I just hope we don't over pay for a 1 year center who will be 30 in Sept.

Re: Giants agree to terms with David Baas
We'll definitely have a better power running game with Baas at center and Diehl at Guard. Honestly, I'm excited about it and Jacobs should be as well.
Side note: Diehl loses 750,000 dollars not playing LT. While everyone focuses on that number just think you can see why releasing O'Hara and Richie saved us in more ways then one. On the business side of it Baas saved us a lot of money.

Side Note #2: David Baas had six different coordinators in 6 years. He'll wear #64.
