Offseason thoughts 10 March
I am thinking our new defensive scheme will be some variant of a Tampa 2 (incoporating some elements from Spagnuolo's/Sheridan's system
I think the Giants will take a more low/patient key approach however we will at MLB, S and perhaps a couple of other positions before the offseason is done.
Free Agency
Sign QB Shaun Hill (49ers)
A decent backup QB with some experience
Sign RFA CB Richard Marshall (Panthers)
A young starting calibre CB with excellent, production, durability and legitimate speed. Marshall will compete for a starting spot and helps us match up against faster receivers.
Marshall has only 30 starts in his 64 NFL games, but he does have 334 tackles (291 solo), 4 sacks, 34 Pass Def, 11 Interceptions (224 yds, 2 TDs) and 2 FF.
The bottom line is that Marshall significantly upgrades our secondary.
Second round compensation
Sign RFA OG/OC David Baas (49ers)
A good, powerful guard with a nasty attitude and can also play center. Baas would likely slot into LG leaving Diehl at LT or allowing options with McKenzie depending on his health.
Third round compensation
Sign UFA S Gibril Wilson, Dolphins
With Phillips coming off injury, I think we are looking to add a reasonably priced, solid veteran as insurance.
With alot of good safety talent around and a stacked draft class, Gibril won't get a huge contract. However he does provide a good #3 safety, and insurance for Kenny Phillips. Regardless this is a signing we wont break the bank for.
Positional Moves
Sintim to DE - He isn't a good fit for a Tampa2 OLB, but he does make a good DE.
Draft
15. MLB Rolando McClain, Alabama, 6-3⅜, 254, 4.60
I think the Giants have McClain rated higher (not sure I agree) and it looks like he could be available here (as there will likely be a lot of lineman go early). Either way McClain is a good option to anchor the middle of our defense.
17. MLB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri, 6-1¼, 239, 4.68, 34
I think Weatherspoon is a very close option to McClain, for a Tampa2 whilst he is a good fit at MLB, he also has the size, speed and range to play outside. We ideally need quality OLBs. With Weatherspoon still on the table, the Giants make the move. The 49ers have 2 2st round picks - this lets them add a stud edge rusher. This would be a surprise, but if we want to use a Tampa2 we need two starting LBs
The Giants trade Osi Umenyiora and a conditional early 2011 pick to San Fransisco for #17
Second Round pick used to sign RFA CB Richard Marshall
Third Round Pick used to sign RFA OG David Baas
112. S Major Wright, Florida, 5-11½, 206, 4.48
A hard hitting safety with very good speed, athleticism and ball skills.
143. DT Linval Joseph, East Carolina, 6-4½, 328, 5.11, 39
A small school DT with great, strength, power, athleticism and mobility
174. DE C.J. Wilson, East Carolina, 6-2⅞, 290, 4.82, 32
A small school DE with good tools and ability.
205. P Zoltan Mesko, Michigan
A Punter with a booming kick
This would give the Giants a roster something like:
Offense (25)
QB (3): Eli Manning, Shaun Hill, Rhett Bhomar
WR (6): Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Ramsees Barden, Domenik Hixon, Derek Hagan
TE (3): Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe
RB (4): Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Andre Brown, Gatrell Johnson
FB (1): Madison Hedgecock
OT (3): Kareem McKenzie, David Diehl, William Beatty
OG (3): Chris Snee, Davis Baas, Guy Whimper/Kevin Boothe/Adam Koets
OC (2): Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert
Defense (25)
DE (2): Justin Tuck, Matthias Kiwanuka, Clint Sintim, CJ Wilson/Dave Tollefson
NT (2): Barry Cofield, Linval Jospeh/Rocky Bernard
UT (2)): Chris Canty, Jay Alford
SLB (2): Sean Weatherspoon, Brian Kehl
MLB (2): Rolando McClain, Jonathan Goff/Chase Blackburn
OLB (2): Michael Boley, Gerris Wilkinson
CB (5): Corey Webster, Richard Marshall, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, Bruce Johnson
SS (2): Kenny Phillips, Gibril Wilson, Michael Johnson
FS (2): Antrel Rolle, Major Wright
Special Teams (3)
LS (1): Zak DeOssie
K (1): Lawrence Tynes

I like Shaun Hill and Marshall.
I don't see the Giants starting two rookie linebackers on opening day.
I'll be surprised if they start just one.

Re: Offseason thoughts 10 March
Although the rookie backers are great players starting two of them might be a bad call. I think this sintim can't play the cover 2 is being overstated. He is used to zone coverages from his days playing in va where he played a 3-4 that runs a lot of zone. He does have the athletic ability to play zone it's the man coverage where he struggles. He doesn't have the loose hips to cover Te's and backs one one one. So good thing he won't be asked to do that. Also fewell isn't bringing that traditional Tampa 2. His style is a lot more aggressive and involves more blitzing.
I'm not crazy about the idea of givin up those draft picks. Marshall isn't worth a 2nd and baas isn't worth a 3rd, IMO.

Re: Offseason thoughts 10 March
I agree, I not a big fan of it. It is interesting to make assumptions and work from there as to the kind of things that could be done.
I a don't think it is an issue of Sintim playing in a cover two, but more of a Tampa2 style where he has more coverage responsibilities, bui I could easily be be wrong.
Fewell certainly wont have a traditional Tampa 2, but he will use alot of components. I expect it will be some combination of what the Bills had under Fewell and what the Giants used with Spagnuolo.
I am interested to see how it works out. It should be vert effective
